    JOHN ANDERSON, Ph.D. is the director of the Journalism and Media Studies (JAMS) degree program at Brooklyn College. A scholar of media history and political economy, he authored the first critical analysis of radio’s digital transition in the United States and specializes in research involving media policy and activism. His ongoing study of the phenomenon of unlicensed broadcasting has been acknowledged by the Federal Communications Commission for its comprehensiveness and practicality. A radio and online journalist for two decades, John is a strong proponent of journalism in the service of democracy. In addition, John is a research associate and Labor Radio Caucus Chair of the Library of Congress’ Radio Preservation Task Force; serves as vice president of Wave Farm, a New York-based non-profit organization devoted to transmission arts; sits on the Steering Committee of the Union for Democratic Communications; and is a member of the CUNY Journalism Discipline Council, housed in the Graduate School of Journalism.
