Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Irina Patkanian is an award winning filmmaker, a William J. Fulbright and MacDowell fellow and the president of ³In Parenthesis,² a nonprofit film, theater and media arts company (www.inparentheses.org). Her documentaries and fiction narrative short films have played and won awards in film festivals and art venues worldwide. She holds a BA in English Literature from University of St. Petersburg, Russia; an M.A. in Linguistics and an M.F.A. in Film Production from the University of Iowa. She is a recipient of grants from American Association of University Women, NYSCA, Tow, Blaustein, Troy and Jerome Foundations.Prof. Patkanian just finished a stop motion animated documentary about a little Mozambican boy whose family members are all made from pieces of guns, based on childhood memories of renowned Mozambican artist Fiel dos Santos. Irina has been teaching creative documentary and single camera production at Brooklyn College since 2001.
