DIGITAL engAGEment: Media. Literate. #activist

Following the resounding success of last year’s conference, the Media Studies M.S. Program at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York is pleased to announce its second annual DIGITAL engAGEment Conference to take place on Friday, May 18, 2018 at 25 Broadway in Manhattan’s Financial District.

DIGITAL engAGEment encompasses myriad ways in which humans encounter, utilize, create and participate with digital technologies, processes, experiences, cultures and environments in the contemporary moment.

This year’s conference theme: Media. Literate. #activist, is a call to express and refresh concepts of media activism and media literacy in the present moment, specifically: what it means to be a media activist, to study media activism and to critique media coverage and activism in the current digital (and political) environment? How does media activism connect to media literacy – by which we mean both the educational and social movements that encourage critical engagement with media, but also the basic comprehension and understanding the digital environment requires of its users and citizens?

To propose your work:

Please send an email containing: (or attach a .doc or pdf containing the requested information for your particular type of proposal) to MJ Robinson at mj.robinson29@brooklyn.cuny.edu proposals are due by 5p.m. on March 19, 2018 notifications will go out via email on March 26, 2018.

See below for what we rsequest for the various types of presentation proposals (and if you have a type of presentation we haven’t accounted for, please let us know what you propose.)

Paper:

Title of Paper and a 200 word abstract summarizing the paper’s content in relationship to the conference theme and topic. **NOTE: We do consider “already formed” panels of papers – please provide abstracts for each paper on the panel as well as a 200 word abstract summarizing the panel’s raison d’etre in relationship to the conference theme. Presentation sessions are 60-75 minutes so please plan accordingly.

Roundtable:

Title of Roundtable Participants and contact info Four conversation-generating questions you propose to address at the Roundtable. 200 word abstract summarizing the Roundtable’s raison d’etre in relationship to the conference theme and topic.

Workshop:

Title of Workshop Participants and contact info 500 word description of the workshop – in relationship to the conference topic and theme – what is its purpose, what will participants do or create, what will they use or need to bring to the workshop?

Installation/art work:

Title Artist and contact info Dimensions/Media 200 word abstract describing the piece in relationship to the conference topic and theme Please attach up to three pictures of the work or a link to it if it is a video/audio/webbased If the work requires any special handling, display resources or technology, please let us know (this is for curatorial reasons, not a basis for the selection or decline of the piece.)

Intervention/happening:

Title (or name for it): 500 word description of the intervention/happening – what will happen? How? Who? What is its goal, what is its intervention in relationship to the conference theme.

If you have staged this elsewhere and have media of it, please include a link to any relevant content or attach images. If this requires any particular resources or space accommodations, please describe them for us. Also, and crucially, how long does this take? (Note that multi-part happenings may be spread through the day – we ask this question for curatorial and inclusionary reasons.)
